Jaren is an album collage - mixed by my good friend Darren Scott - and released alongside Niemandsland in 2005.

Darren worked with hours of unused ideas, sketches and recordings and created the four suites on this release. In jaren, Darren tells a cohesive story: Beautiful, sometime dark and ultimately soothing.

From Darren Scott:

"... A little context. Back in 2005, whilst we were discussing what bonus material we could offer alongside Matthew's next album 'Niemandsland', he suggested a very novel idea - one that required, certainly from his part, a large amount of trust.

The idea was for me to have all the unused material from the 'Niemandsland' sessions - since I had a particular interest in one of the tracks. He would give permission for me to edit/restructure/sequence any of this unused music into a new collage of music.

So I took a harddrive back to the UK (Matthew lived in Netherlands at this time) and tried to work out how I would approach this project. I realised that what connected me to his was my emotional response to it, and the way the albums take you on a journey.

So I began to listen to each track in isolation and immediately after listening I would write words that describes how it made me feel.

It transpired that many would mirror how the annual seasons affected me emotionally.

So, one mirrored how the smell of Spring affects me, or the sound of crushed leaves in Autumn, or the shiver and warmth of passing through shade in the sun of Summer. I then grouped many of the tracks into 'seasons'.

From this, I created mini journeys through the seasons (UK seasons I should add!), and the result was jaren.

In collaboration with Matthew, I think we tweaked some of it, and he let me master it for the final release.
